Beginning in 1988 with a drug awareness program, the FBI has expanded its outreach efforts to include crime, drugs, gangs, terrorism, and violence prevention. Linking community service, drug-abuse prevention, and law enforcement is a major national trend as grass-root efforts have brought about federal government support for public safety initiatives. FBI employees have joined in this national movement, volunteering in a wide variety of community-related efforts.
